You’ve finished your certificate program or earned your degree or completed editing courses. You hear about the wonders of being your own boss. Of editors out there kicking ass and taking names (in the form of revising words, that is), but how do you become that editor?

It sounds amazing, right? Editing professionally as a career—without moving to New York and being a coffee gofer first. But you don’t have the faintest clue where to begin or whether you can do this without someone to teach you.

Now What?

Got your editing certificate? Learned about standard rates and what seasoned editors charge and went straight for that? Or maybe you went straight for lowball prices and created 50% off sales or promotions.

The problem is that while that’s probably a good way to start things off, that’s only about 5% of the effort required to start a successful editing career.

One of the biggest mistakes new freelance editors make is setting up shop and… waiting. They sit around waiting for the magic to happen.

Way More Than Twenty Questions

If you’re starting out, you’ve probably got loads of questions. Do you need a website? Should you post your rates? Should you do sample edits? How do you collect money? Do you need a contract? A domain name? How do you find your first client? How do you get testimonials? How do you get repeat business? How do you manage expectations?

These are things that often plague new editors or editors in training. But there’s one BIG question many fledgling editors ponder at some point, and sometimes it sounds so simple that it can be embarrassing to ask: How do you get started?

Crystal’s new coaching-centric Slack community, the Editors Foundry, is a chat space dedicated to helping new editors found a business focused on fiction and/or creative nonfiction.

The Editors Foundry may be right for you if you are:

Meet Crystal Watanabe

Crystal Watanabe, a.k.a. Pikko, is the owner of Pikko’s House and has been providing editorial services to independent authors, writers, and traditional publishing houses since 2014.

While Crystal holds a fancy-schmancy degree in English, her passion for creative writing and storytelling goes back to her small-kid days, when she wore down her eyesight reading under the covers well after bedtime, until eventually everyone decided it was better to simply turn on more reading lights.

She currently runs Pikko’s House from Honolulu, Hawaii, where she lives with her husband, three kids, three dogs, and editorial hens.

Pikko’s House currently serves hundreds of clients each year. The Pikko’s House team, managed by Crystal, is comprised of eighteen subcontractors and one virtual assistant. Crystal built Pikko’s House from scratch and transformed it into a six-figure business in under four years.
